Making An InfoPass Appiointment

There may come a time where you, as a nonimmigrant awaiting green card approval in the United States, will need to temporarily leave the United States to tend to an emergency situation abroad prior to the approval of your advance parole travel authorization.

In such cases, you will want to apply for “emergency” advance parole with your local United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) office after submitting your green card application. Possessing an approved advance parole document, providing everything else is in order, will allow you to leave the United States without abandoning your green card application and re-enter without difficulty. Failure to obtain advance parole prior to leaving the United States will result in the abandonment and subsequent denial of your green card application, unless you hold a valid H-1B or L-1 visa, and in difficulty re-entering the United States.

The USCIS website allows you to make an appointment with an immigration officer at your local immigration office through their website. The appointment is known as an “InfoPass Appointment” and allows you to secure an appointment online for a future date to discuss your matter with an immigration officer.

Below is a step-by-step guide to using the InfoPass system to schedule an Emergency Advance Parole appointment:

  1. Through a computer with Internet Access, type in the following URL: https://my.uscis.gov/appointment
  2. When the page is loaded, select your preferred language from the menu on the left.
  3. Select “Make your appointment with InfoPass.”
  4. Scroll down to the prompt that requests your home Zip Code and enter it. Click Continue.
  5. If the entry returns any results, select the field office closest to your location and click Continue.
  6. Select “You need information or other services.”
  7. Disregard the recommendation to visit the main USCIS URL, and click Continue.
  8. On this page, fill out your complete contact information. Your A# is printed on your I-485 receipt. You should insert the receipt number from your I-131 receipt, which can be found on the top left hand corner of the receipt. Click Continue.
  9. Click Continue if the listed information is accurate.
  10. Once you select a day, you will be presented will a list of open time slots. Choose the earliest time possible.

You will likely be required to present the following documentation at your appointment:

  1. Your passport (both the original and a copy)
  2. Birth Certificate (original and copy along with a translation if necessary)
  3. All receipt notices you have received in connection with your green card application and associated work and travel authorization application.
  4. Documentation relating to why is it necessary for you to travel outside of the US. Note: Being granted emergency advance parole is at the discretion of the USCIS officer, and is typically granted only in cases of personal, family, and business-related emergencies.
  5. Evidence of a travel itinerary (i.e., plane ticket) scheduled to commence within the next 48 hours.
  6. Completed I-131 form, signed and dated in Part 8, located on the last page.
  7. 2 US passport style photos.
